Architectural Design 5

Project 2.1 and 2.2

Project 2.1

Phase 2.1 emphasizes developing architectural strategies for a community-focused Learning Center in Merdeka 118 Precinct. Students interpret site-specific urban challenges through SWOT analysis, precedent studies, and design explorations. This phase encourages innovative solutions addressing site context, public realm integration, and user behavior. Key elements include massing models, spatial planning, and responsive architecture principles. The design prioritizes inclusivity, environmental sustainability, and adherence to regulatory codes. Deliverables include concept diagrams, 1:100 plans, and narrative essays exploring urban theories. The outcome is a cohesive strategy that balances form, function, and community needs, fostering social interaction and enhancing the urban fabric.

Project 2.2

Phase 2.2 focuses on advancing the architectural narrative into a cohesive design for a Learning Center in Merdeka 118 Precinct, emphasizing place-making, sustainability, and integration with the urban fabric. This stage builds on the strategies established in Phase 2.1, delving into spatial design, façade articulation, and environmental considerations. The Learning Center design balances public, semi-public, and private realms, with spaces like interactive learning studios, exhibition areas, and outdoor gathering spots fostering inclusivity and social interaction.

A standout feature of this proposal is the Breathing Walls concept, tailored for the vibrant yet historic Petaling Street. These walls employ a perforated façade system designed to enhance natural ventilation, echoing traditional tropical design. By incorporating passive cooling elements, air circulation is optimized, reducing reliance on mechanical systems while aligning with the site's warm and humid climate. Additionally, the breathing walls integrate urban greenery, allowing climbing plants to naturally filter air and create a visual connection to the street's historic character.

Design considerations extend to the pedestrian experience, ensuring walkability and accessible entry points for all users, including OKU facilities. Façade detailing respects the cultural essence of Petaling Street while introducing modern materials and innovative shading devices. The layout maximizes public engagement, with vibrant outdoor spaces for events and flexible indoor spaces adaptable for future use.

This phase concludes with detailed orthographic drawings, physical models, and a final presentation showcasing a Learning Center that embodies sustainability, cultural continuity, and urban revitalization in Kuala Lumpur's historic core.
